46th St.Hilda’s Festival
When the scorching summer heat starts to die down it is a reminder that we have now entered the autumn season. That means we are now in the season in which my favourite school event is held, St.Hilda’s Festival. Before coming to Japan, I wasn’t aware of events such as school cultural festivals as we don’t have them back home in England. However, last year I had experienced attending St.Hilda’s Festival for the first time and I was completely blown away. It quickly became my favourite school event and I loved telling my family and friends about it.
On the Friday before this year’s festival, I went around to each classroom to see how the preparations were going. I was so shocked at the effort that the students and teachers were putting into transforming the classrooms. What was once a normal classroom with desks and chairs became a dinosaur theme park or an art exhibition.
I admired the energy that the students had and the way they worked together efficiently. Despite knowing that the festival would be postponed and shortened to one day, the students were determined to give it their all and make the most out of the situation.
This year’s festival theme was 「Refresh」 and the student-designed mascot was an adorable planet wearing the school uniform. The whole school was decorated beautifully from the entrance to the stairs and even the restrooms. I was really excited for the festival and tried my best to go to every event. There were many guests, but everything was organised so perfectly due to the efforts of the festival committee and students.
I was thoroughly impressed by all the classrooms and the lively attitude each student had shown me. I went to watch some performances in the hall such as the choir and the brass band. Both of which were outstanding. I enjoyed listening to the choir sing “ We’re all in this together” as it reminded me of the time when I was also a high school student. The brass band played a catalogue of wonderful songs which were a delight to listen to. I ended my day by watching the English performance of Frozen, the acting and singing was so spectacular that it moved me to tears.
Well done to all the students and a big thank you to all the staff who helped make this possible. I will be talking about St.Hilda’s festivals for many years to come.
