Homepage article - End of Year Reflection
As the school year comes to an end, along with our first winter in Japan, I thought it would be a good idea to write a reflection on our time at St. Hilda’s. Whilst we are still learning many new things about how the school runs, about Japanese culture and the language, I can’t help but feel a sense of belonging to the school as if we have been here for a long time, and as if it has become our second home. It’s safe to say that our time at St. Hilda’s so far has been a delight. The students are a pleasure to teach and always manage to put a smile on my face. Particularly with regards to English Tea Time, which was held weekly towards the end of the second term and during the third term. We are delighted to have returning students for tea time and it’s so lovely to see so many students enthusiastic to practice their English and learn more about our culture. We have held many little events such as quizzes to little chats in English with tea and biscuits. Our final tea time with Junior High was perhaps the most exciting, as students had the opportunity to taste Marmite and Liquorice. Marmite is a famous spread in England made from yeast extract and often spread upon toast or in sandwiches. It has quite a unique taste and it’s often followed by a famous saying “You either love it or you hate it”. I absolutely love marmite and I used to have it everyday as a child, Ms. Ngo on the other hand, would rather not have it at all. Liquorice is a traditional English sweet and we had many requests from students to bring some in, but this too has quite a quaint taste. Ms. Ngo and I, can both agree on this one, it’s not really to our taste. But not to worry we also provided some Jaffa cakes, a sweet English treat that everyone enjoys. We also played some English classroom games, such as heads down, thumbs up. We had a lot of fun and we are looking forward to planning something similar to continue in the new school year. Teaching in all the classes across a range of years has been a great experience. It’s been wonderful to see how different teachers teach and it’s been great to meet all the students. In particular I remember being invited to the Chemistry class and as a science graduate myself, I was so excited to return to a laboratory. I had lots of fun helping the students conduct their experiments and teach some scientific terminology in English. I also enjoyed joining a 5SE class about self defence in the final term. It was lots of fun and I learnt many new techniques on how to protect myself. It has also taught me some more Japanese and helped me practice my listening. Before this article gets too long or I begin to bore you with a retelling of the whole 7 months I’ve been in Japan (I can’t believe it’s already been 7 months!) I will end this article here with just this last message - thank you to all the students and teachers at St. Hilda’s for making everyday amazing. I’m looking forward to working with you all again. よろしくお願いします。
